Description

Artist Statement My work is largely an inspiration from the Star Wars movie series, as well as the spin-off video game Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. The concepts of shielding and droids were mainly from Star Wars. The inspiration of having the airplane as being a sort of space transportation vessel comes from the numerous Sci-Fi movies Iíve seen, and Sci-Fi video games Iíve played, as well as actual space transport that is being carried out today. My inspiration for the overall design of the ship is mainly from Star Wars. Iíve also taken some inspiration as to the setup of my short story from some of the previous yearsí contest winners. The characters are largely of my own creation, and any matches to actual people are mere coincidence. The same goes for the name of the ship. The actual names of the characters were off the top of my head, but there was much more thought as to who they should be. I felt that I should tell the story from the captainís view to give a better description of how the airplane/ship works and it to makes more sense that the captain would be doing and thinking of these things rather than a random passenger. I made the ship more like a futuristic airplane for a few reasons. First, I wanted the ship to fit the theme a little better. Second, I wanted to toy around with the idea that at the rate technology is going we may actually have airplanes that can survive a trip to the Moon or Mars in the next century or two. I didnít want to take things too much out of proportion with reality, as this would alter the theme of my story a bit.
